HAMPTON - George Robert Gatling Jr., 60, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2011, after a courageous battle with vascular disease that caused several strokes. Born in Virginia, he spent most of his life in the Tidewater area.
Robert served the United States in the Air Force between 1969 and 1973. He was an active member of West Hampton Baptist Church and loved singing with the Church Choir, Senior Choir, Men's Ensemble, and Praise Team.
Survivors include his two sons, George Gatling III and Tristan Gatling; his parents, Lillian and Bob Gatling Sr.; his sister, Diane Humphrey; his brother-in-law, Monty Humphrey; his brother, David Gatling; his sister-in-law, Robyn Gatling; his four nieces and nephews, Cameron Humphrey, Shannon Humphrey, Kristyn Gatling and Corey Gatling; his great-niece, Peyton Humphrey; his great-nephew, Preston 'Coop' Humphrey; and also a special friend that was close to his heart, Gabriele Tallent.
His family and friends will join together to honor his passing Monday, May 16, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A memorial service celebrating Robert's life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at West Hampton Baptist Church, 631 Aberdeen Road, Hampton, with Dr. Danny Owens.
His family wishes to express deep gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff of Riverside Regional Hospital, Riverside Rehabilitation Institute, and the Gardens at Warwick Forest. In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorial donations be made to the West Hampton Baptist Church Building Fund or to the Riverside Foundation at Fountain Plaza One, 701 Town Center Dr, Suite 1000, Newport News, VA 23606. |
